Punta del Este – Miami feel, Uruguay deal! $27.50 USD pp

Punta del Este is a resort town in southeastern Uruguay. In the high season (from the end of December through mid-January), the area has a strong party vibe and has been compared to a mix of Miami and Atlantic City. Beautiful people gather at the beach to soak up the sun during the day, and then enjoy all the night life festivities. Thank goodness for me, I think we just may miss the brink of all that South American sexiness. I’m not sure I’m ready to rock a thong bikini that many wear as they chill by the beach. 

One of the hostels that we selected for this city is called Rojo y Negro. Recently opened in 2012, I was immediately drawn to the clean, modern vibe. At $27.50 USD per person for a private ensuite twin, I think we’ll enjoy our stay here.

 The Review

Rojo y Negro is a breath of fresh air in the hostel scene in Uruguay (or the world for that matter). Geared towards families and couples, it is modern, clean, and hosted by a lovely mother and daughter team. Rooms are spacious and have clean, memory foam mattresses. Dual sinks, lockers for storage, great Wi-Fi, and a clothesline outside your room for laundry are some of the amenities. There is also a new pool on the premises, with lawn chairs and a BBQ for use. During our stay, rooms were serviced with new towels and soaps, toilet paper when needed. Shampoo is not provided.

The kitchen is well stocked and has everything you need for cooking your meals with a small grocery store called El Dorado right down the street in easy walking distance.

You can find this gem in the La Barra neighborhood approximately 5 miles from Punta Del Este. Go to the Punta Del Este bus terminal. Take the #14 bus to the second stop after crossing the unique ribbon bridge. It is a short walk from the bus stop.

We enjoyed our time here very much and highly recommend this accommodation. The only negatives we would anticipate is a busy kitchen during the high season. During some of our stay, when we were the only guests, I felt “in the way” while cooking lunches and dinners, alongside the staff.
