Our curiosity with Macedonia began with opening up our first bottle of Macedonian Vranec. While in Croatia, we typically reached for local varietals such as Plavic Mali or Babić. On a whim, we decided to purchase a bottle of Vranec and were blown away by the dry red wine, especially for the price. Our tasting inspired us to learn more about Macedonia, including exploring its Povardarie wine region. Bitola was one of our favorite stops on our tour of Macedonia. It has a charming, small city vibe with shady parks and a cafe-lined Main Street. Of all of Macedonia’s cities, Bitola feels the most European with its romantic 19th century neo-classical architecture. Known as The City of Consuls, it is home to twelve different consulates.
