With the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) set to launch on November 10, 2024, travelers might face delays and extra checks at European borders. The EES aims to streamline entry by automating passport control and collecting biometric data. If you want to sidestep these new regulations, here are ten European destinations where the EES won’t apply.

The EU has two upcoming border control measures aimed at enhancing security and managing immigration more effectively. The Entry/Exit System (EES), launching on November 10, 2024, will automate passport checks and collect biometric data to monitor traveler movements in and out of the Schengen Zone. Following that, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), set to roll out in 2025, will require visa-exempt travelers to obtain pre-travel authorization, adding an extra layer of screening to improve safety and border management.

EES and Privacy Concerns

Travelers may choose to avoid countries using these enhanced border control systems due to potential delays, fees, and discomfort with increased data collection. The EES will gather biometric data like fingerprints, facial scans, and iris scans, raising concerns for those uneasy about sharing personal information, such as travel history and health details, with government systems.

What About the UK?

Although the United Kingdom is not part of the Schengen Area, it is slowly rolling out its own digital authorization system called the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). An ETA costs £10, allows multiple trips, and is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. An ETA is required when transiting through the UK, even if you do not pass through border control.

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme is currently being rolled out. It became operational for certain nationalities in late 2023 and will be expanded globally by April 2025. As of now, nationals from countries such as Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, UAE, and Saudi Arabia already require an ETA to visit the UK. Other non-visa nationals, including those from the US, Canada, and Australia, will need an ETA from January 2025, while European nationals will need one starting in April 2025.

10 Non-Schengen Countries to Avoid EES

With Bulgaria and Romania joining the Schengen Area in March 2024, it’s getting harder for travelers to travel in Europe while avoiding the EU and its rigorous policies. These are the remaining European destinations outside the Schengen Zone and places where tourists can avoid EES.

Turkey straddles the line between Europe and Asia and is outside the EU, so it’s not affected by the EES.
