If you rent an ATV and start from Thira, your first stop should be Vothonos which is on the way to see Perissa's black beach. From there, we'll explore Santorini in a clockwise direction, hitting all 12 must-see attractions and experiencing the island's highlights in one amazing day!
Sure, hitting up all these spots in one day may be challenging, but it's definitely doable. Alternatively, instead of hitting up all of them, you can pick the ones that align best with your interests, to make the most of your time.
First, head to Vothonos after picking up our ATV—about a 15-minute ride from Fira.
1. Vothonos
Vothonas, a traditional village in southeastern Santorini, is renowned for its unique cave houses and beautiful churches like St. Anna’s and the remote Panagia Church. Exploring Vothonas will not only offer a glimpse into authentic village life and stunning scenery but also allow you to get familiar with your ATV, as it takes you off the main roads and into the heart of the island.
You can park here and walk to the blue-domed Church of Agia Triada which overlooks the small village.
2. Pyrgos
The old capital with ruins of Pyrgos Kallistis Castle and narrow paths. During Easter, the traditional candlelit procession is a spectacular sight as thousands of candles illuminate the village. If you're hungry consider Franco's Cafe next to the Venetian castle.
3. Prophet Elias
The island's highest peak with a monastery offering panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see as far as Crete from this vantage point.
4. Emporio
The largest village on Santorini, featuring Byzantine fortress ruins and historic windmills. Don't miss the opportunity to explore the Venetian Castle of Emporio, which offers a glimpse into the island's defensive past.
5. Perissa Black Beach
Located in Perissa, this is the largest beach on Santorini with black pebbles and seaside dining options. The beach offers sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, and water sports facilities are available for those seeking adventure. Gyros Place is a fantastic spot to grab a gyro and one of the most affordable on the island.
Alternatively, head to the beach and visit Pepito if you're interested in going for a swim and grabbing a bite. Beach chairs are complimentary if you order food/drinks, and while there is a minimum, it's quite low.

Finally, you may be wondering why we didn't include Ancient Thera in the above itinerary. In short, it's simply too far out of the way and while providing fantastic views (like everywhere on Santorini) many visitors are left disappointed in the state of the ruins.

- Athinios Port (Port of Santorini): Situated at the foot of Mount Profitis Ilias. Over time, it has become the primary port on the island. From Athinios, you’ll need to take a bus to reach the main attractions.
If your tender arrives at Old Fira Port, you can walk up approximately 600 steps to reach Fira or take the cable car for about €6. Another popular option is to take a donkey ride, however, if you're overweight, concerned about the treatment of the animals, or feel like the animals don't look healthy and strong, stick to the cable car or walking, which can be less stressful for both you and the animals.
