Epic One-Day Santorini Itinerary From a Cruise Ship On a Budget

Arriving in Santorini by cruise ship, or any boat, for that matter, is nothing short of spectacular. The moment the island comes into view, you'll understand why it's considered one of the crown jewels of the Greek Isles. We remember our first glimpse, during our extensive tour of the island, the stark white buildings perched precariously on dark, volcanic cliffs, contrasting beautifully with the deep blue of the Aegean. It's a sight that literally stops you in your tracks and makes your jaw drop—it's a magical and unforgettable moment!

As you slowly approach, the landscape unfolds before you. Charming villages seem to ooze down the cliff sides, their blue-domed churches standing out against the whitewashed houses. The rugged caldera looms large, a reminder of the island's volcanic past.

Witness Santorini's magic as it grows on the horizon and soak in the caldera's dramatic views.

Trust us, you'll want to be on deck for this arrival. There's something magical about watching Santorini grow larger on the horizon, revealing its unique beauty bit by bit.

It's one of those travel moments that stays with you. Just take a moment to soak it all in before you arrive in port—in our opinion, looking down on the caldera from the high cliffs is just as dramatic as looking up at it from the water.

Unforgettable One-Day Santorini Itinerary

If we were going to recommend to friends or family how to spend the perfect day in Santorini without spending a small fortune here's what we'd tell them to do. In short, since the ports are located in the central/southern part of the island, we recommend visiting the southern section first and the northern section [Oia and Imerovigli], after the majority of cruise ship passengers have visited it.

This itinerary puts you right in the action—no more just watching others swim; you'll be out there enjoying it yourself!

Getting Around

Navigating Santorini can be tricky and expensive, especially if you’re only visiting for one day. Taxis are notoriously pricey, with even short one-way trips across the island can easily cost €50. While buses are affordable, they’re often slow and crowded, making them less ideal if you're in a hurry to see the island's top attractions in just one day.

ATVing around Santorini is a blast and makes touring the island a breeze—you won’t have to worry about transportation or parking, as it’s super easy to park anywhere.

To make the most of your limited time, consider alternative transportation options. We recommend renting an ATV/Quad to get around affordably, quickly, and easily—we did! Not only is it incredibly fun, but you also have the freedom to come and go as you please. Plus, it's much cheaper than paying for multiple taxi rides and perfect for navigating Santorini's narrow roads and alleyways.

This flexibility lets you explore at your own pace—move on from what doesn’t interest you and linger longer at the spots you love. Enjoy a personalized adventure tailored to your preferences! Below, we’ll guide you on where to go with your ATV.

Alternative Option - Go On a Tour
Private tours put all the responsibility in the guide's hands. It costs more, but it’s worth it if you’re not into ATVing.

If you don't feel comfortable renting an ATV, the next best option is to go on a guided tour. Ideal for cruise ship passengers with just one day on the island, this fantastic private tour offers a hassle-free way to see top attractions like Oia, Akrotiri, and Perissa's black sand beaches. Also, a private tour will allow you to dictate exactly what you want to see and how you want to spend your day based on the itinerary below. This way you don't have

Santorini One-Day Budget Itinerary

If you rent an ATV and start from Thira, your first stop should be Vothonos which is on the way to see Perissa's black beach. From there, we'll explore Santorini in a clockwise direction, hitting all 12 must-see attractions and experiencing the island's highlights in one amazing day!

Life is good in Santorini!

Sure, hitting up all these spots in one day may be challenging, but it's definitely doable. Alternatively, instead of hitting up all of them, you can pick the ones that align best with your interests, to make the most of your time.

First, head to Vothonos after picking up our ATV—about a 15-minute ride from Fira.

1. Vothonos

Vothonas, a traditional village in southeastern Santorini, is renowned for its unique cave houses and beautiful churches like St. Anna’s and the remote Panagia Church. Exploring Vothonas will not only offer a glimpse into authentic village life and stunning scenery but also allow you to get familiar with your ATV, as it takes you off the main roads and into the heart of the island.

You can park here and walk to the blue-domed Church of Agia Triada which overlooks the small village.

2. Pyrgos

The old capital with ruins of Pyrgos Kallistis Castle and narrow paths. During Easter, the traditional candlelit procession is a spectacular sight as thousands of candles illuminate the village. If you're hungry consider Franco's Cafe next to the Venetian castle.

3. Prophet Elias

The island's highest peak with a monastery offering panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see as far as Crete from this vantage point.

4. Emporio

The largest village on Santorini, featuring Byzantine fortress ruins and historic windmills. Don't miss the opportunity to explore the Venetian Castle of Emporio, which offers a glimpse into the island's defensive past.

5. Perissa Black Beach

Located in Perissa, this is the largest beach on Santorini with black pebbles and seaside dining options. The beach offers sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, and water sports facilities are available for those seeking adventure. Gyros Place is a fantastic spot to grab a gyro and one of the most affordable on the island.

During shoulder seasons, the weather is pleasant, crowds are smaller, and prices drop, especially around Perissa's black sand beach, where we stayed for under USD 30 per night.

Alternatively, head to the beach and visit Pepito if you're interested in going for a swim and grabbing a bite. Beach chairs are complimentary if you order food/drinks, and while there is a minimum, it's quite low.

6. Akrotiri Archaeological Site

As a prehistoric Bronze Age city Akrotiri known as the "Pompeii of the Aegean," is preserved by volcanic ash, possibly the site of mythical Atlantis. Guided tours are available to help visitors understand the significance of the well-preserved frescoes and artifacts found at the site.

7. Red Beach

Known for its striking red sand and rock formations, with crystal clear water. Access to the beach requires a short walk, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water. With no amenities available, it's best to take a quick dip and move on.

8. Megalochori
Walking through the village of Megalochori is a delightful way to explore its quaint charm and rich history.

A picturesque village with narrow streets that offer a glimpse into local life. Visit the traditional bell tower and explore the village's hidden cave houses for a unique cultural experience.

9. Venetsanos Winery

Explore the local winemaking process and sample wines. The winery offers a stunning cliffside location with panoramic views of the caldera, making it an ideal spot for a nice light lunch and wine tasting. If possible, be sure to make reservations.

10. Firostefani

Home to the iconic Blue Dome Church, often seen on Santorini postcards. Visit the Three Bells of Fira blue-domed church's iconic viewpoint for breathtaking caldera views, and explore the charming Firostefani central square to experience local life.

10. Imerovigli

A cliffside village known for stunning views and the Skaros rock remnant of an old castle. The village is home to several excellent tavernas serving traditional Greek cuisine with a view. Also, for a quick drink or bite to eat visit Let's Eat.

11. Skaros Rock
Skaros Rock on Santorini is a striking volcanic formation with dramatic caldera views. Its rugged cliffs and mildly difficult access make it one of the best spots for a stunning sunset while keeping away many tourists, offering a more serene experience and breathtaking panoramas of the Aegean Sea.

This prominent rock formation was once the site of an important fortress that protected the island from pirates. Hiking to the top of Skaros Rock offers incredible views of the caldera and surrounding islands, making it a must-do activity for adventurous visitors. Finally, it's also a fantastic alternative location to enjoy a Santorini sunset that is more unique and less crowded than Oia!

12. Oia Town

Famous for its stunning sunset views, upscale atmosphere, blue-domed churches, terraces, and traditional Greek architecture. Arrive early to secure a good spot for watching the sunset, as it can get crowded during peak season. As the priciest area on the island, you can expect higher costs for everything. However, if you're in the mood for a meal, head to Pitogyros Traditional Grill House for a more affordable bite to eat.

Finally, you may be wondering why we didn't include Ancient Thera in the above itinerary. In short, it's simply too far out of the way and while providing fantastic views (like everywhere on Santorini) many visitors are left disappointed in the state of the ruins.

Yearning to Sail?

If you only have one day, fitting in a caldera cruise might be challenging unless it’s a top priority—if it is, definitely go for it.

Cruise passengers craving a water adventure during their brief Santorini visit might consider this popular catamaran tour. You'll sail the caldera on a luxurious vessel, complete with unlimited drinks and a freshly prepared onboard barbecue. Enjoy swimming and snorkeling in crystal-clear waters while taking in breathtaking views of Santorini's coastline. Also, this tour typically includes convenient pickup and drop-off.

⛵ Santorini Sailing Adventure > Check Availability

However, we advise against this option if you have just one day in Santorini. While enjoyable, it consumes significant time, limiting your ability to explore the island's diverse attractions. This tour is best suited for those prioritizing a day at sea over land-based sightseeing.

(Note: We've personally experienced and enjoyed this tour.)

🎁 Looking for souvenirs? Smaller villages offer the best deals on souvenirs, so keep an eye out when visiting Pyrgos and Perissa.

Remember to plan your return to the cruise ship well in advance. This flexible itinerary allows you to mix and match experiences based on your interests, ensuring an exciting and memorable day in Santorini!

Santorini on a Budget > Smart Tips for Day Trippers

Santorini can be pricey, but you can still have a great time on a budget by choosing affordable local eateries and enjoying free or low-cost attractions like beaches and scenic walks.

Make the most of your brief visit to Santorini without breaking the bank. Here are essential tips for cruise ship passengers spending just a day on this beautiful island:

  • Plan your itinerary to maximize your limited time.
  • Get your travel health insurance sorted before departure - we use Insubuy - get a quick quote.
  • Bring comfortable walking shoes - Santorini's terrain is hilly and sometimes uneven.
  • When possible, use the public bus system instead of taxis for significant savings.
  • Bring a steel-insulated refillable water bottle filled on the ship before disembarking.
  • Pack snacks from the ship like energy bars, fruits, or nuts to keep you fueled.
  • Bring travel-size sunscreen - prices on the island are significantly higher.
  • Take advantage of free activities like walking the caldera path or exploring villages.
  • Bring cash (euros) for small purchases and bus fares.
  • Avoid overpriced restaurants near major attractions. Look for local tavernas slightly off the main paths.
  • Remember to factor in time for queuing for the cable car or donkeys to return to your ship.
  • Use your ship's WiFi before disembarking to download offline maps and info.
  • Be wary of "tourist menus" - they're often overpriced. Order à la carte instead.
  • Consider sharing larger meals or meze platters with travel companions to sample more dishes economically.
  • If exploring independently, compare prices of shore excursions offered by your cruise line with local operators.
  • Bring your own beach towel if planning a quick beach visit.

Tips Before Departing ATV Rental Agency

Before taking the ATV from the rental agency in Santorini, you should take similar steps as for a car rental, be sure to:

  1. Inspect the ATV Thoroughly: Check the overall condition of the vehicle. Look for any existing scratches, dents, or damage. Take clear photos of the ATV from different angles to document its condition.
  2. Check the Gas Level: Note how much fuel is in the tank. Take a photo of the fuel gauge to avoid disputes about fuel levels when you return the ATV.
  3. Test the Basic Functions: Ensure that the brakes, lights, horn, and other essential functions are working properly. Ask the rental agency for a brief rundown on how to operate the ATV if you're unfamiliar.
  4. Confirm Insurance and Rental Terms: Review the insurance coverage and rental terms to understand your responsibilities and any potential extra charges. Now, is a good time to check whether you purchased Cruise/Travel Medical Insurance. We use Insubuy when traveling overseas—it's the perfect balance of affordability and coverage.
  5. Ask About Local Regulations: Inquire about local driving rules and any restrictions to ensure a smooth and legal ride around the island.

Departing the Santorini Cruise Port - What to Expect

Santorini has two main ports where cruise ships use tenders to bring passengers ashore, as both ports are too small for ships to dock directly.

  1. Santorini Old Fira Port: As one of the oldest ports on the island, the Old Fira Port has served as a key entry point since ancient times and is still bustling with activity, featuring shops, restaurants, and tourist information centers.
  2. Athinios Port (Port of Santorini): Situated at the foot of Mount Profitis Ilias. Over time, it has become the primary port on the island. From Athinios, you’ll need to take a bus to reach the main attractions.

If your tender arrives at Old Fira Port, you can walk up approximately 600 steps to reach Fira or take the cable car for about €6. Another popular option is to take a donkey ride, however, if you're overweight, concerned about the treatment of the animals, or feel like the animals don't look healthy and strong, stick to the cable car or walking, which can be less stressful for both you and the animals.

Taking these steps will help ensure a trouble-free rental experience and avoid any misunderstandings with the rental agency.

Remember, the best things in Santorini – like stunning views and charming villages – are often free! With these tips, you'll make the most of your short visit without overspending. Enjoy your day in paradise!
