I resigned today. During my lunch break, I drove over to the administration building where a decade earlier I had accepted my first and only job. Because I felt that ending a career should be this greatly documented event, for three days I pondered what song would be playing as I headed over to tell my supervisor my news.
It’s not for lack of trying, but unfortunately, I never came to any great conclusion. So as I scarfed down my lunch, I just left the 80’s station on. As I drove along, Joe Jackson’s “Steppin’ Out” started playing. In my head, I tried to make the lyrics correlate to this major life event that was about to occur. At least it gave me this:
We are young. But getting old before our time
We’ll leave the T.V. and the radio behind
Don’t you wonder what we’ll find
Steppin’ out tonight?
Alright…I got nothin’. But from now on, this song will always bring me back to the day that ended a decade of dedicated work to the place where I both started and (for now) ended my career.
